Former President Donald Trump on Thursday endorsed State Senator Burt Jones (R-Jackson) in his campaign for Georgia lieutenant governor.

In the statement, Trump highlighted the record of the state lawmaker, calling Jones a “Patriot” and that he will “always stand up for America First.”

“State Senator Burt Jones is a Conservative warrior running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia. No one has fought harder for Election Integrity than Burt, and no state needs it more. A businessman and Patriot, Burt will always stand for America First, and will help bring back Energy Independence, a Strong Border, Low Taxes, Great Education, and Safe Cities,” Trump said in the statement.

“Burt Jones has my Complete and Total Endorsement. He will not let the great people of Georgia down!”

Jones has closely aligned his campaign with Trump. Previously, Jones told The Georgia Star News that he felt “real good” about gaining the endorsement from the former commander-in-chief.

Furthermore, Jones is campaigning as a “consistent conservative.”

“I am the only consistent conservative that is going to be in this race. I am going to be an underdog too, going up against someone with all the lobbying and special interest groups behind him. That’s fine,” Jones told a crowd of supporters at a campaign event. “Sometimes I have to stand up to both parties. But if you see me standing up or speaking out against something it’s because I am doing it for you. I have never forgotten about my hometown roots or where I came from.”

If elected, Jones has pledged to help enact a host of conservative priorities, including eliminating Georgia’s state income tax.

The GOP primary for the position follows current Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan detailing that he would not seek a second term.
