The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday unanimously rejected a bid from former President Donald Trump’s legal team to block an investigation from Fulton Country District Attorney Fani Willis into his efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results in the Peach State.
Trump’s team filed the request on Friday, after previously filing a similar bid in the Fulton County Superior Court, The Hill reported. That the lower court has yet to decide the matter formed the basis of the Supreme Court’s refusal.
“The Court has made clear that a petitioner cannot invoke this Court’s original jurisdiction as a way to circumvent the ordinary channels for obtaining the relief,” the ruling stated. “He is asking this Court to step in and itself decide the motions currently pending in the superior court. This is not the sort of relief that this court affords, at least absent extraordinary circumstances that petitioner has not shown are present here.”
The Trump team’s motion named Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney, who has not decided on the March request, and complained about his lack of action on the matter.
Willis, in April, signaled that charging decisions in her investigation may come sometime during the Fulton County Superior Court’s fourth term of court, which spans from July 11 to Sept. 1.
The case has attracted scrutiny for alleged political bias and concerns mounted following the curious media tour of grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs, who made a series of high-profile appearances in legacy media outlets during which she appeared erratic and seemed to express an interest in issuing Trump a subpoena solely for the purpose of interacting with him.
Willis has yet to unveil any charges against Trump, however,
Georgia was one of a handful of states that President Joe Biden narrowly won in the 2020 contest. Trump has claimed that voter fraud influenced the outcome and repeatedly excoriated state Republican officials such as Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for not aggressively investigating his claims.
