Former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Saturday that if social media companies don’t moderate content on their various platforms, “we lose total control.”
She appeared on Michael Smerconish’s weekly show on CNN to discuss her new book and some current political issues.
Clinton said that more needs to be done at the federal level to regulate social media, Fox News reported.
“We can look at the state of California, the state of New York, I think some other states have also taken action,” Clinton said.
“But we need national action, and sadly, our Congress has been dysfunctional when it comes to addressing these threats to our children,” she added.
“We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn’t be judged for the content that is posted,” Clinton said.
“But we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control,” she continued. “And it’s not just the social and psychological affects, it’s real life.”
On another topic, Clinton suggested last month in an interview on MSNBC that Americans engaged in what she would consider interfering in U.S. elections by spreading “propaganda” should be civilly or even criminally charged as a deterrent, citing her 2016 election loss to Donald Trump.
She also said in that interview with Rachel Maddow that “I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for the press to have a consistent narrative about how dangerous Trump is,” and that “Donald Trump has disqualified himself over, and over and over again to be a presidential candidate let alone a president.”
