Hundreds of Georgia residents and potential Republican voters on Saturday attended a Floyd County GOP event, which featured top candidates running for office in 2022.
In the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds event, speakers ranged from Governor Brian Kemp, U.S. Senate contender Gary Black, and state Senator Burt Jones (R-Jackson) — a candidate for lieutenant governor.
Most candidates pitched voters on their refusal to enact mask mandates or opposition to key platforms of the Democratic Party.
Gary Black, the current Georgia Agriculture Commissioner, urged his fellow Georgians to continue to “believe in Georgia” in order to win the upcoming Senate race against Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA)
Specifically, Governor Brian Kemp, who took the stage to a mix of cheers and boos, informed voters of his support for Georgia’s new election law — which Democrats have targeted and was the source of the Major League Baseball (MLB) decision to move the All-Star game from Atlanta.
However, Kemp is facing a primary challenge from former state Representative Vernon Jones. Jones has pledged to be loyal to former President Donald Trump. Trump has consistently targeted Kemp and vowed to support a primary challenge against the incumbent governor.
Jones, who also spoke at the large event, reiterated his various calls for increased election security throughout the state.
Furthermore, state Senator Burt Jones, after recently declaring his candidacy for lieutenant governor, pitched voters on cutting the state’s income tax and increasing funding for law enforcement agencies.
Notably absent from the strong Republican district event was Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Raffensperger has been the source of strong frustration among GOP voters throughout the state. Until recently, Raffensperger refused to examine multiple irregularities that transpired in Fulton County in the November 2020 election.
Attendees cast ballots in a straw poll that demonstrated Raffensperger trailing two other candidates for the top election position.
