A majority of Georgia voters now believe the Fulton County criminal case against former President Donald Trump and those who helped him contest the 2020 election is “unfair,” according to new polling by Rasmussen Reports. Georgia voters also support a special session in the Georgia Legislature to defund or impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
The majority of Georgia voters said they believe Trump is being unfairly prosecuted, with 56 percent of respondents to Rasmussen agreeing, including 39 percent who said it was “very likely.” This is compared with just 37 percent of voters who said it was unlikely Trump was being unfairly prosecuted.
While Republican elected officials have largely sided against State Senator Colton Moore (R-Trenton) and his petition for a special legislative session to impeach or defund Willis, the poll reveals that a majority of voters now back Moore’s call for a special session.
Rasmussen reports that 53 percent support a special session to stop Willis’s prosecution of Trump, with 37 percent of respondents saying they strongly support such an action. Just 38 percent of Georgia voters oppose a special session to confront Willis. Additionally, 51 percent of voters believe the Georgia Legislature should use its oversight authority to investigate Willis, while just 34 percent are opposed.
Governor Brian Kemp (R) is a vocal opponent of Moore’s call for a special session, declaring it “political theater” and calling the petition a “grifter scam,” but the poll reveals Georgia voters may reward him should he change his tune.
Thirty-six percent of voters said they would be more likely to vote for Kemp if he were to oppose Willis’s actions vocally, and just 33 percent said it would make them less likely. Opposing Willis would also increase Kemp’s support among 58 percent of Republicans, according to the poll.
Most Georgia voters also continue to believe the 2020 election was tainted by “cheating,” with 52 percent telling pollsters it affected the outcome. Additionally, 55 percent of respondents said they believe cheating will impact the 2024 election results.
Sixty-two percent of Georgia voters expressed concern that “election results in their state don’t accurately reflect the true number of votes,” including 81 percent of Georgia Republicans, 46 percent of Georgia Democrats, and 56 percent of unaffiliated voters.
Meanwhile, the charges against Trump do not appear to harm the former president in The Peach State. Pollsters revealed that 58 percent of Georgia voters now have a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 41 percent who hold an unfavorable opinion.
At the same time, just 45 percent of Georgia voters told pollsters they approve of President Joe Biden’s job performance, while 52 percent disapprove.
Pollsters say they contacted 1,061 likely Georgia voters between September 8 and 11 and reported a margin of error of +/- three percentage points.
