Tennessee Nurse Who Fainted After Receiving COVID-19 Vaccine Says It Was Due to Underlying Condition

The nurse who appeared to faint after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine in a viral video has recovered, according to a statement issued by her employer. Tiffany Dover, a nurse at CHI Memorial Hospital, reportedly came close to passing out due to a medical condition unrelated to the vaccination.

The hospital also cited information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, which stated that fainting sometimes occurs after all types of vaccinations.

In the viral video, a masked Dover spoke with reporters about receiving the vaccine. Mid-sentence, Dover touched her hand to her forehead and stated that she felt “really dizzy.” Dover took several steps aside to leave before falling, with several staffers rushing to treat her.

CASE

After Dover fainted, she told reporters that she had a history of “overactive vagal response.” The condition causes fainting in response to certain triggers such as extreme emotional distress or, as Dover shared, the slightest amount of pain.

The hospital issued a follow-up video of Dover standing with her colleagues. The other staffers held signs that indicated they supported Dover and had received the vaccine.

CHI Memorial Hospital issued their first doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines last Thursday.

The response to Dover’s fainting spell coincided with medical officials’ concerns with the vaccine. Following the first rounds of vaccinations in multiple states, some recipients began developing allergic reactions.

Researchers have offered up several theories to explain the varied allergic reactions. Some theorized that the nanoparticles within the vaccine may be the culprit. Others speculated that the chemical ingredient polyethylene glycol was to blame. Nobody has discovered the exact cause yet, though officials have stated repeatedly that reactions are “rare.”

According to the CDC, over 4.6 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed. Of those, over 614,000 vaccines have been administered. The CDC hasn’t included the total number of allergic reactions on their tracker. Officials stated that only 6 individuals so far have reported allergic reactions to the Pfizer vaccine.
