Former President Donald Trump addressed the press Thursday shortly after his booking and release at the Fulton County jail, where he was placed under arrest on 13 felony charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election result in the state.
“What has taken place here is a travesty of justice,” Trump said. “We did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong.”
The former president faces charges under the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, as well as charges of conspiracy, making false statements and soliciting a public official to violate their oath.
He referred to what was taking place as “election interference.”
“What they’re doing is election interference and trying to interfere with an election,” Trump stated. “There’s never been anything like it in our country before. This is their way of campaigning.”
Trump is the frontrunner in the majority of political polls for the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, all while facing four indictments – two of which are federal.
“We did nothing wrong at all,” he emphasized. “And we have every right–every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest.”
Many of Trump’s co-defendants in the Georgia case – including Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Jenna Ellis – have already turned themselves in.
Trump’s bond has been set at $200,000. He will need to return to Fulton County for his arraignment, or first court appearance unless a judge waives the proceeding or allows it to happen virtually.
