Georgia State Representative Mesha Mainor Leaves the Democrat Party

Georgia State Representative Mesha Mainor (R-Atlanta) announced Tuesday her decision to leave the Democrat Party and join the Republican Party.

Mainor (pictured above) said her decision was based on morals, not politics, adding, “I will NEVER apologize for being a black woman with a mind of my own.”

Mainor wrote in a social media statement, “I didn’t leave the Democrat Party. The Democrat Party left ME when it embraced left-wing radicalism, lawlessness, and put the interests of illegal aliens over the interest of Americans. I have nothing to apologize for.”

While addressing her constituents, Mainor further defended her switch to the Republican Party, adding in a video statement, “We have been on a journey together for two terms and we’ve had some wins, but there is a better path and we can do so much more.”

Mainor’s switch to the Republican Party shifts the balance of power in the Georgia State House to 102 Republicans-78 Democrats.

Following her announcement, Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon welcomed Mainor to the Republican Party.

“This is a historic day for Georgia Republicans. We are delighted to welcome Rep. Mainor to the Georgia Republican Party and look forward to collaborating with her to advocate on behalf of hard working Georgians,” McKoon stated. “Our Party stands for empowering parents to be advocates for giving their children the best education possible, that every Georgia deserves to feel safe at home, at work, and in school; and to have the economic opportunity to build better lives.”

McKoon added that Mainor will continue her service in the General Assembly as the newest member of the House Republican Caucus, effective immediately.

Many Republicans acknowledged Mainor’s switch to the party, including former Georgia U.S. Senator and current Chair of Greater Georgia Kelly Loeffler, who wrote on Twitter, “[Mesha Mainor] was attacked the moment she spoke out for law enforcement and educational freedom…because as we know, that’s unacceptable in the modern-day Democratic Party. Grateful for her conviction, and her willingness to serve our state – as Georgia’s newest Republican!”

Florida Congressional Candidate and Florida GOP Committeewoman Lavern Spicer also acknowledged Mainor’s decision, writing on Twitter, “I would like to welcome a STRONG BLACK WOMAN into the Republican Party. Mesha Mainor of Georgia has LEFT the Democrat Party because they were demonizing her over her support for school choice. She is the newest addition to the Georgia Republican Party. WELCOME HOME, SISTER!”

The DeKalb County GOP also welcomed Mainor to the Party, tweeting, “We applaud your courage and desire to ensure that all Georgians and all Americans have access to the resources they need to realize their American dreams.”
