Inmate at Fulton County Jail Dies at Hospital Days after Being Found Unresponsive in Cell

Another inmate serving time at the Fulton County Jail died after being found unresponsive in their cell last month, according to a press release by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).

On Wednesday, the FCSO announced that inmate Shawndre Delmore, age 24, was found unresponsive in his unit cell on August 31 at approximately 8:19 p.m. as detention officers were conducting a routine check on inmates.

Upon being discovered by the detention officers, jail staff performed lifesaving measures in attempts to revive Delmore until advanced medical staff arrived and transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital, as he was still unresponsive. Delmore died at the hospital on September 3.

Delmore, being held on a $2,500 bond and signature bond, was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department and booked at the jail in April for Burglary in the Second Degree and Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers.

Delmore’s death comes after five other inmates passed away at the jail last month, as previously reported by The Georgia Star News – four inmates were found unresponsive in their cells and one inmate died due to a stabbing attack inside the jail.

CASE

The Atlanta Police Department is currently investigating the stabbing incident. In addition, in all five inmate death cases, the FCSO added in its press releases that the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies to determine the causes and manner of deaths of each inmate.

The deaths come as the Fulton County Jail is currently under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. The entities are investigating various issues at the jail, including inmate deaths, living conditions, medical and mental health care, excessive force, and protection from violence. The investigation will also examine whether there is discrimination against individuals with psychiatric disabilities within the jail.

A total of 17 individuals have died while in custody at the Fulton County Jail this year alone.
