Marjorie Taylor Greene Moves to Impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday unveiled a resolution to impeachment Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who has long been a lightning rod for conservative criticisms of the Biden administration’s immigration policy.

Greene’s effort represents the latest in a long line of efforts to boot Mayorkas for his handling of an unprecedented surge in illegal arrivals to the United States. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reported more than 7 million migrant encounters at the Southwest Land Border alone since President Joe Biden took office.

The resolution identifies myriad failings of Mayorkas to maintain secure on the nation’s Mexican and Canadian frontiers as justification for his ouster.

“In his willful admittance of border crossers, terrorists, human traffickers, drugs, and other contraband, Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas has failed to maintain operational control of the border, thereby violating the Secure Fence Act of 2006,” Greene wrote. “As Secretary of the Department of Homeland Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, has violated his oath to uphold this constitutional duty by allowing the invasion of approximately 10,000,000 illegals across our borders.”

CASE

“The ongoing invasion at our southern border is a direct national security threat against the States and against the citizens therein,” it continued. “Secretary Mayorkas has willfully abandoned his duty to secure the border and protect States against invasion, thereby violating article IV, section 4 of the Constitution.”

Prior to Greene’s effort this week, Texas Republican Rep. Pat Fallon filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas in January of this year. Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs did so in August of 2021, and then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy floated the idea in April 2022.
